Mufasa: The Lion King Sets Disney+ Release Date

Mufasa: The Lion King, the highly anticipated prequel to the beloved Lion King franchise, has officially confirmed its Disney+ streaming release date. After its theatrical release last year and a digital release last month, the movie will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting March 26, 2025.

Fans in the UK will be able to stream the film from 7am GMT, while those in the US can watch it at 3am ET and midnight PT.

Directed by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, the prequel explores the story of a younger Mufasa. The film features the voices of Aaron Pierre as the titular character, alongside archival recordings of James Earl Jones, who famously voiced Mufasa in the original Lion King films. Additionally, Elvis star Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices Taka.

Returning cast members from the 2019 live-action Lion King remake include Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, and John Kani as Rafiki. Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, stars as Simba’s daughter Kiara. New faces in the cast include Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, and Lennie James.

While Mufasa: The Lion King received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 57% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it has been praised for offering a more positive reception than the 2019 remake. Director Barry Jenkins discussed the decision to honor James Earl Jones by opening the film with his voice following the actor’s passing in 2024, calling it an essential tribute to the legendary voice actor.

Mark your calendars for March 26 and get ready to experience Mufasa’s origin story on Disney+.
