Florence Pugh Calls ‘Thunderbolts’ a ‌‘Badass Indie Assassin Movie’

Florence Pugh has revealed that Marvel’s upcoming Thunderbolts film feels quite different from typical Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, describing it as a “badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes.”

In an interview with Empire magazine, Pugh shared her excitement about the unique tone of the film, which is directed by Jake Schreier, known for his work on the A24-produced Netflix series Beef. Schreier also emphasized the film’s emotional darkness, which complements the action and humor, creating a distinct atmosphere.

“There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different,” Schreier said, noting that the film’s balance of humor and emotional depth will set it apart from other Marvel films.

Thunderbolts follows a group of antiheroes brought together for a government mission, featuring Pugh as Yelena Belova, alongside Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker. Pugh also teased her character’s dynamic with a team member, Bob, played by Lewis Pullman, saying that Yelena has a soft spot for him, seeing parts of herself in him despite his incompetence.

The film, produced by Kevin Feige and executive produced by Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, and Jason Tamez, is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025. With its unique indie influence, Thunderbolts is shaping up to offer Marvel fans a fresh and exciting take on the superhero genre.
