On April 5, 1971, Newsweek journalist Loren Jenkins bestowed the title “Poet of Politics” upon Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This recognition came in light of his extraordinary oratory skills, exemplified by the historic March 7th Speech. Delivered at the Racecourse Ground (now Suhrawardy Udyan) in Dhaka, the speech was a rallying cry for the people of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to prepare for independence.
Jenkins highlighted Mujib’s ability to inspire and mobilize millions through his words, which carried the rhythm and depth of poetry. The March 7th Speech, with its iconic declaration, “The struggle this time is the struggle for our emancipation! The struggle this time is the struggle for our independence!”, united a nation on the brink of liberation.
This title, “Poet of Politics,” underscores Mujib’s unique blend of political vision and poetic expression, which continues to inspire generations and remains a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s identity.
