A military aircraft crashed in a residential area on the outskirts of Khartoum, Sudan, on Tuesday night, killing 46 people. Initially, 19 deaths were reported, but the Sudanese government confirmed today (Wednesday) that the death toll has risen to 46. Among the victims were both military personnel and civilians.
The military-run health ministry stated, “After a final count, the number of fatalities has reached 46, while 10 others have been injured.”
According to local media News Central, the plane crashed shortly after taking off from Wadi Seidna Air Base. Both military and civilian officials were on board. The preliminary cause of the crash has been attributed to a technical failure.
Sudan’s military has been engaged in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, severely affecting civilians. Just days ago, the RSF claimed to have downed a military aircraft. Now, another military transport plane has crashed.
The injured and deceased were initially taken to Al-Nau Hospital in Omdurman. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion before seeing the aircraft crash into a residential area, destroying multiple houses. It remains unclear whether any residents were among the casualties. The crash also caused a power outage in the affected neighborhood.
