At Least 59 Palestinian Prisoners Die in Israeli Jails

At least 59 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli prisons since the start of the Israeli aggression in Gaza in October 2023.

Most of the deceased Palestinians were residents of the besieged Gaza Strip, according to a report by the Anadolu Agency on Tuesday (February 25).

The report cites a statement from the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, which said that at least 59 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli custody since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023.

According to the organization, 38 of the deceased prisoners were from Gaza. It also accused Israeli authorities of concealing information about the deaths of Gaza detainees.

The Prisoners’ Affairs Commission reported on Monday that a Gaza detainee, Musab Hani Haniyeh, died while in Israeli custody. The 35-year-old was arrested by Israeli forces from the southern city of Khan Yunis on March 3, 2024. His family stated that Haniyeh was in good health before his arrest.

According to Palestinian statistics, at least 296 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli prisons since the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in 1967. Currently, around 10,000 Palestinians are imprisoned in Israel, excluding thousands of detainees from Gaza whose exact number remains unknown.

A ceasefire has been in effect in Gaza since January 19, 2025. The three-phase truce includes prisoner exchanges, a permanent ceasefire, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel continued its relentless attacks on the besieged territory for months.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, nearly 48,350 Palestinians have been killed since Israel’s mass offensive began in October 2023, with hundreds of thousands more injured.

The UN reports that around 85% of Gaza’s population has been displaced due to Israeli attacks, and 60% of the territory’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed. Israel is already facing genocide charges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
