The Goonies 2 Officially Happening with Spielberg and Chris Columbus

After decades of speculation, the sequel to The Goonies is officially happening! The beloved 1985 family adventure film, which became a cult classic, is set to return with The Goonies 2.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. is moving forward with the sequel, and the iconic Steven Spielberg will return as a producer. Joining him is Chris Columbus, who wrote the original film’s script, playing a key role in the production.

However, while the involvement of these legendary names is confirmed, the plot remains under wraps for now, and no director has been officially attached to the project yet. Additionally, it’s unclear whether stars like Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Josh Brolin will reprise their roles.

In a 2023 interview, Ke Huy Quan, who saw a career resurgence with Everything Everywhere All at Once, shared his thoughts on why a sequel hadn’t happened sooner. He revealed that numerous scripts had been written, but none lived up to the magic of the original. Quan also expressed his love for the character of Data, hinting that a return to that role would be a dream come true if the opportunity arose.

Sadly, the Goonies family lost a key figure in 2021 with the passing of Richard Donner, the director of the original film. His loss had left many fans wondering if a sequel would ever come to fruition, but now it seems that the journey to find new treasure and relive the magic of the Goonies’ adventures will indeed continue.
