A trade agreement between Washington and New Delhi in the energy sector is set to take place soon, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated. The agreement will be designed in a way that benefits both parties.
Narendra Modi traveled to Washington yesterday to meet and hold discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. Before the meeting at the White House, Modi said in a briefing at around 4 PM local U.S. time, “We are prioritizing commercial exchanges of oil and gas to ensure India’s energy security. Additionally, we want to increase investment in nuclear energy infrastructure. For this reason, a trade agreement between India and the United States will be finalized very soon.”
Following the Prime Minister’s statement, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in a briefing in New Delhi that the agreement could be finalized within the next seven months.
During the press conference, Modi also mentioned that India aims to increase its purchase of American defense equipment to “hundreds of billions of dollars” and is also interested in seeing the U.S. as a “top supplier” of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
