U.S. Awami League Holds Protest in Washington, D.C., Demanding Resignation of Dr. Muhammad Yunus

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Awami League organized a large human chain in front of the State Department and the White House on [insert date], demanding the resignation of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, whom they accuse of leading an unconstitutional, interim, forcefully occupied government. The demonstrators voiced strong opposition to what they called an illegal takeover and demanded the immediate restoration of democracy in Bangladesh.

The protest was also a response to Operation Devil Hunt, a reported nationwide crackdown on Awami League leaders and activists. Protesters condemned the arrest and inhumane torture of party members, along with the bulldozing, looting, and arson attacks on the homes of Awami League activists, including the historically significant 32 No. Road, the residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. They alleged that government-backed forces have been systematically targeting pro-democracy voices to suppress opposition.

Speakers at the event, including key figures from the U.S. Awami League and expatriate Bangladeshi community, called on the U.S. government, international organizations, and human rights groups to intervene and hold the interim regime accountable. They urged world leaders to stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh in their fight for democracy and justice.

Leaders and activists from all U.S. states participated in the demonstration, carrying banners, chanting slogans, and demanding justice for the victims of political repression. Protesters held placards with messages such as “Step Down, Dr. Yunus,” “No to the Illegal Interim Government,” and “Restore Democracy in Bangladesh.” The demonstration also highlighted concerns over media censorship, suppression of dissent, and alleged election irregularities under the interim administration.

The U.S. Awami League announced that they would continue their protests and advocacy efforts, urging the Biden administration and global policymakers to take a strong stance against the current political crisis in Bangladesh.
