Two UK Nationals in Security Custody in Iran

A man and a woman have been taken into custody in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported the news on Thursday. IRNA also published photos of two British nationals taken into custody. In the blurred picture, they are seen meeting the UK ambassador. Their identities could not be ascertained. It is not clear when they were taken into protective custody.

UK officials have not yet commented on the matter.

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards have arrested several dual nationals and foreigners in recent years. Most were arrested on espionage charges and security concerns.

Human rights groups and Western countries accuse Iran of arresting foreigners or dual nationals on security grounds to extract benefits from other countries. Those arrested may not be at fault.

Tehran denies arresting people for political reasons.
