UK Warns Citizens of Potential Terrorist Attacks in Bangladesh

The UK government has issued a travel advisory for its citizens regarding visits to Bangladesh, warning of a high risk of terrorist attacks targeting British interests and citizens. The advisory states that British-affiliated establishments and individuals could be potential targets.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has warned that locations frequented by foreign nationals in Bangladesh are at high risk of terrorist attacks. The advisory further states that attacks can occur at any time, particularly in crowded areas, religious sites, political gatherings, and places where foreigners are present. Additionally, extremist groups may target individuals who follow ideologies perceived as anti-Islamic.

The UK government has also noted that security operations in Bangladesh have reduced the frequency of terrorist attacks in recent years. However, the threat of isolated incidents and ongoing risks still exists. According to the UK Foreign Office, religious minorities and law enforcement personnel have been frequent targets of attacks, sometimes involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The advisory highlights that Bangladeshi security forces are actively working to prevent terrorist attacks, with efforts to disrupt planned attacks. However, this may result in an increased security presence and temporary travel restrictions. British citizens have been advised to remain aware of their surroundings at all times, particularly near police stations and law enforcement offices. Additionally, they have been warned to avoid large gatherings or protests, as these can quickly turn violent.

The FCDO has specifically advised British citizens to avoid travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts unless necessary. The advisory warns of regular incidents of violence and criminal activities in remote areas of this region, particularly in Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban.

Regarding political instability and security risks, the UK government has noted that Bangladesh’s political situation remains volatile. Violent incidents in July and August 2024 resulted in several deaths and injuries. Political rallies and protests can escalate into violent confrontations with law enforcement. Given the current political climate, strikes and blockades may occur, potentially leading to violence, arson, and vandalism. Even personal and public transport could be targeted. As a result, British citizens have been advised to avoid such situations and stay informed through local media.

Concerning crime and personal safety, the UK government has warned of crime risks, particularly in Dhaka and other major cities. Incidents of mugging, robbery, and violent crime occur frequently. Motorbike-riding snatchers are a particular concern, as they often grab bags and mobile phones from pedestrians. British citizens have been discouraged from walking alone or using public transport at night, particularly rickshaws, CNGs, buses, and trains.

Regarding airport and transportation security, while Dhaka and Sylhet international airports are fully operational, some security risks remain. Incidents of theft, passport loss, and taxi scams have been reported at airports. The UK government has advised British nationals to avoid unauthorized agents at airports and to use reliable transportation options.

British citizens have been urged to stay updated on the overall security situation in Bangladesh. The UK government has stated that if conditions worsen, they may issue further warnings.

Political and Security Situation in Bangladesh

The interim government’s chief advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has been criticized for a significant deterioration in law and order. Reports suggest that under the pretext of “mob justice,” innocent people are being attacked and killed. Leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement have allegedly issued public threats against members of the ruling Awami League.

There have been claims that these groups, after prior announcements, are planning to destroy the historic Bangabandhu Memorial at Dhanmondi-32, as well as engage in widespread looting and arson targeting former presidents, ministers, MPs, ex-military chiefs, and police officials’ residences. Reports also indicate that dead bodies are being found in various locations across the country.
