New Government to Be Formed in Syria Next Month

Syria’s Foreign Minister, Asad Al-Shaibani, has announced that a new government will be formed in the country in March. He provided this information during a meeting on the sidelines of the World Government Summit held in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.

Since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government last December, Syria has been governed under an interim administration. Speaking at the World Government Summit in the UAE, the Syrian interim government’s foreign minister stated that the government to be established on March 1 will include representatives of the people and take the country’s diversity into account.

The armed Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) led the movement to oust Assad from power. In December, facing intense protests from HTS-led rebels, President Bashar al-Assad fled the country and took refuge in Russia.

Last month, Ahmed al-Shara, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, took over as the interim president of Syria. Immediately after assuming power, he dissolved the parliament from Assad’s era and banned the Ba’ath Party, which had ruled Syria for decades. He was also given the responsibility of forming Syria’s interim legislature.

After the new government takes power, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other allied rebel groups will also be disbanded. It has been announced that the fighters from these rebel groups will be integrated into the country’s new national army.

Earlier this month, in an interview, al-Shara mentioned that organizing a national election in the country could take up to five years. The new authorities have pledged to hold a national dialogue conference with the participation of all citizens. However, they have not yet set a date for this conference.
