Legendary Singer Pratul Mukhopadhyay in ICU

The legendary singer, lyricist, and composer Pratul Mukhopadhyay, known for the iconic song “Ami Banglay Gan Gai”, is critically ill and currently in the ICU under intensive medical supervision at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. Hospital sources have reported that his condition remains unstable.

Pratul was admitted to the hospital in January after his health deteriorated. He was experiencing bleeding from his nose, and he was placed under the care of specialists in neurology and ENT (ear, nose, and throat). He has been in the hospital for nearly a month, during which time he underwent intestinal surgery. Last week, he suddenly developed breathing difficulties, and further tests revealed that he had suffered a heart attack. He was immediately transferred to the cardiology department for treatment. During his time there, his lungs became infected as well, and his condition worsened rapidly.

Hospital authorities have stated that, in addition to the complications, Pratul developed an antibiotic-resistant infection, which has made his condition even more critical. He is currently in the ICU, and his situation remains precarious. A special medical board has been formed to oversee his treatment.

Upon hearing the news of his illness, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited him in the hospital on January 15. While lying in the hospital bed, Pratul Mukhopadhyay serenaded her with his famous song “Ami Banglay Gan Gai”. Due to his deteriorating health, two state ministers, Indranil Sen and Arup Biswas, are keeping track of his condition.

Pratul Mukhopadhyay was born in 1942 in Barisal, Bangladesh, and later moved to Kolkata with his family. He grew up and received his education there. His albums include “Pathore Pathore Nache Agun” (1988), “Jete Hobe” (1994), “Otho He” (1994), “Kuttus Kattus” (1997), “Swopner Feriywala” (2000), “Tomake Dekhechhilam” (2000), “Swoponpure” (2002), “Anek Notun Bandhu Hok” (2004), “Hojoborol” (2004), “Dui Kanur Upakhyan” (2005), “Andhar Name” (2007). His most recent album, “Ami Banglay Gan Gai”, was released by Bengal Foundation in Bangladesh in March 2011. Pratul Mukhopadhyay also contributed his voice to the soundtrack of the Bengali film “Gosai Baganeer Bhoot”.
