Vandalism and Looting at Homes of Former Presidents, Ministers, MPs, Army Chiefs, Journalists, Awami League Leaders, and Police Officers in Bangladesh

Bangladesh seems to have turned into a land of death, with extreme chaos prevailing across the country. Law enforcement agencies, seemingly backed by the state, are maintaining a deafening silence. Mob justice is rampant, allegedly orchestrated by Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and the Interim Government’s Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, along with his advisory council members.

The so-called Anti-Discrimination Student Movement is leading these violent actions, which include setting fire to homes, looting, and bulldozing the residences of former ministers, MPs, army chiefs, journalists, Awami League leaders, and police officers. Dead bodies are reportedly being discovered daily in various parts of the country.


Attack and Arson at Former President Abdul Hamid’s Residence

In Kishoreganj, protesters vandalized and set fire to the residence of former President Md. Abdul Hamid. An excavator was used to demolish the Awami League’s party office. Additionally, the homes of Syed Ashfaqul Islam, the Joint General Secretary of the District Awami League, and Dhaka Metropolitan Police officer Biplob Sarker were attacked and vandalized.

These incidents took place between 8:00 PM and 10:30 PM on Thursday (February 6, 2025).

According to local sources, on Thursday night, enraged students and citizens first declared the Awami League party office as a “public toilet.” Later, at around 8:00 PM, they used an excavator to demolish the building and set it on fire.

Around 9:00 PM, protesters attacked the residence of Syed Ashfaqul Islam and Biplob Sarker before proceeding to Abdul Hamid’s home, where they carried out arson, looting, and vandalism.


Destruction of Former Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder’s Home

The residence of former MP and Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder in Naogaon-1 was demolished using a bulldozer, and the house was set on fire by enraged students and protesters. Members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were reportedly present at the scene.

The demolition began at 6:00 PM on Thursday (February 6, 2025), starting with the house’s main gate. Once the bulldozer entered, it wreaked havoc, followed by protesters setting the house on fire.

Earlier, at around 5:00 PM, thousands of people gathered near the Naogaon-Bogura regional road, waiting for a bulldozer to arrive and demolish the Awami League’s district office. Protesters first held a rally and then used a bulldozer to destroy the building. After half an hour of destruction, they removed shutters and iron window bars. The protesters later hung a banner declaring the site a “public toilet.”

During the demolition, army personnel reportedly visited the location but later withdrew.

Following the destruction of the party office, protesters marched to Sadhan Chandra Majumder’s house and began their attack at 6:00 PM, culminating in setting the house on fire.


Arson at Former Army Chief’s Home

At 8:00 PM on Thursday (February 6, 2025), protesters attacked and set fire to the ancestral home of former Army Chief Moeen U Ahmed in Begumganj, Noakhali.

Simultaneously, the residence of former mayor and Awami League leader Akhtar Hossain Faisal in Chowmuhani Municipality was vandalized and looted. Leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement denied involvement.

According to police and local sources, around 8:00 PM, over a hundred young men armed with sticks attacked the former Army Chief’s home in Aliapur village, Begumganj. The assailants vandalized the two-story residence of his younger brother, Javed U Ahmed, a former district Awami League Vice President, and set fire to the drawing room.

At the same time, another group attacked the home of Akhtar Hossain Faisal. Witnesses reported that many attackers wore helmets and masks. There were no casualties since the houses were unoccupied, and security guards fled in fear.


Vandalism and Looting at Former Minister Zahid Ahsan Russell’s Home

In Tongi, Gazipur, enraged students and locals attacked the homes of former State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell and his uncle, Awami League leader Matiur Rahman.

The protests began on Thursday evening (February 6, 2025) and escalated into full-blown vandalism by 9:00 PM. Protesters entered the homes, looted valuables, and set parts of the buildings on fire.

Both residences are located in the Noagaon area of Tongi. Following the Awami League’s downfall, both Russell and Matiur have gone into hiding.

Locals reported that protesters had been gathering near the houses since Thursday afternoon. Around dusk, they stormed the homes, forced out a family of three, and carried out destruction. Some individuals were seen preparing to bring in an excavator to demolish the structures entirely.


Arson at Former State Minister Murad Hasan’s Home

At around 10:00 PM on Thursday (February 6, 2025), enraged students set fire to the residence of former State Minister Murad Hasan in Sarishabari, Jamalpur.

Simultaneously, the homes of Upazila Awami League President Sanowar Hossain Badsha and former Upazila Chairman Rafiqul Islam were also attacked.

Local sources reported that a group of angry students stormed Murad Hasan’s house, vandalized his personal vehicles, and set parts of the house on fire.


Midnight Arson at Sheikh Selim’s Banani Residence

At around 1:30 AM on Friday (February 7, 2025), enraged protesters set fire to the Banani residence of Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Selim. Due to security concerns, the fire department was unable to respond immediately, and firefighters could not reach the scene until 2:45 AM.


Destruction of Khan Sahib Osman Ali’s Home

At around 7:00 PM on Thursday (February 6, 2025), protesters in Narayanganj attacked and demolished the ancestral home of Khan Sahib M Osman Ali, a founding member of the Awami League and grandfather of former MP Shamim Osman.

Hundreds of BNP activists and enraged citizens, reportedly led by Narayanganj BNP leaders, attacked the residence with hammers before bringing in an excavator to demolish it. Protesters set fire to the building as well.


Attack on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Historic Residence

On Wednesday night (February 5, 2025), enraged students stormed and vandalized the historic 32 Dhanmondi residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Using bulldozers, they destroyed most of the building and set fire to the remains.

Additionally, throughout Bangladesh, residences and offices of numerous Awami League leaders have been attacked, looted, and set on fire.
