Fire Set at Bangabandhu’s Dhanmondi 32 Residence After Massive Vandalism

A group of protesters vandalized and set fire to the historic residence of Bangladesh’s founding leader, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, at Dhanmondi 32. Allegedly, activists from BNP-Jamaat-Shibir and extremist groups, disguised as students, gathered in front of the house, chanting slogans.

Since Wednesday evening (February 5), a crowd started assembling near the residence. As time passed, the number of protesters increased.

According to a pre-announced program, the demonstrators entered the house around 8 PM. They started chanting slogans and began vandalizing the property. Additionally, the mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the entrance was demolished.

Although the police were present, they did not intervene to stop the attack. This incident further highlights the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh. It seems there is no rule of law, as anyone can now destroy homes without consequence. Since August 5, under the meticulous design of the interim government’s Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the country has plunged into chaos. Dead bodies are being discovered daily, turning Bangladesh into a “death valley.”

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the so-called student protesters carried out extensive destruction at Dhanmondi 32. Many were seen shouting slogans while systematically tearing down the building’s infrastructure. Additionally, a section of the second floor was set on fire. A similar incident had previously occurred on August 5.

Earlier in the day, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced her participation in a virtual session with leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. In response, at 9 PM, the July Revolutionary Alliance announced a protest program named “Long March to Dhanmondi-32.”

Furthermore, various Facebook pages associated with the so-called “Student-Public Movement” promoted this protest plan.

Notably, on August 5 of the previous year, amid the anti-discrimination student movement’s “March to Dhaka” protest, then-Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina left for India due to the worsening situation.
