At Least 65 Killed in Deadly Clashes in Sudan

At least 65 people have been killed, and more than 130 others injured in violent attacks and clashes in Sudan, particularly in the southern and western regions of the country.

The conflict, fueled by a power struggle between the Sudanese military and paramilitary forces, continues to devastate the African nation. According to a report by AFP on Tuesday (February 4), the deadly fighting has intensified.

Medical sources reported that at least 65 people were killed, and over 130 were wounded in fierce battles in South and West Sudan on Monday. In South Kordofan’s capital, Kadugli, artillery shelling killed at least 40 people and injured 70 others.

Sudanese army-controlled Kadugli was attacked by a faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu, according to Governor Mohammed Ibrahim. In a statement to AFP, he accused the rebel forces of targeting civilians to destabilize the region. He vowed to “clear the hills surrounding Kadugli from rebel control.”

The governor also confirmed that the shelling targeted a local market. Meanwhile, SPLM-N has engaged in conflicts with both the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across parts of South Kordofan.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, but in recent weeks, fighting between the army and the RSF has intensified.

In another incident, airstrikes on Monday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, killed 25 people and injured 63 others, according to a medical source cited by AFP.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, reported that the attack targeted the “Cinema District” in Nyala, an area under RSF control. The RSF dominates much of Darfur, including Nyala, which is 195 kilometers from the besieged capital of North Darfur, El-Fasher.

El-Fasher, home to around two million people, has been under RSF siege since May last year.

Earlier, on Saturday, at least 60 people were killed, and over 150 were injured in Omdurman, a part of greater Khartoum controlled by the Sudanese army, following RSF shelling of a crowded market.
