20 Bodies Washed Ashore Off Libya, Suspected to Be Bangladeshis

The bodies of 20 migrants have been recovered from an area on the Mediterranean coast of Libya. Most of them are believed to be Bangladeshi nationals. However, the identity is yet to be confirmed. This information was found in the sources of Bangladesh Embassy in Libya.

“The embassy has received information from various sources that a number of bodies of migrants have been recovered in the last two days off the banks of Brega in the Mediterranean Sea in eastern Libya,” the embassy said in a post on its Facebook page on Thursday. According to local rescue authorities, the bodies washed up on the banks of Brega after a boat carrying migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea. ’

The embassy’s Facebook post also said, “According to various sources, there is a possibility of Bangladeshi citizens among the bodies recovered. However, the embassy has not yet been able to confirm this. The embassy is in close contact with all concerned, including local authorities, to gather more information. ’

The embassy said on Saturday, “It is not yet confirmed which country these people belong to.” However, the local Red Crescent thinks that all of them are citizens of Bangladesh. The embassy has not yet received permission to visit the place from where the bodies were recovered. ’
The embassy also said that no nationality documents were found with the bodies. The bodies were buried in Ajdadiya, 40 kilometers from Brega, as they could not be identified.

Libya is one of the main routes to enter Europe illegally through the Mediterranean. Small boats are mainly used to go to Europe on this route. These boats carry more passengers than capacity. Every year, many migrants die while traveling this way.
