Target Killing in Bangladesh: Minority Student Shot Dead in Public

Bodies Being Recovered Regularly Amid Law and Order Deterioration

In Bangladesh, Arnab Kumar Sarkar, a minority and a student of Khulna University (KU), was killed in an open shooting by miscreants.

The incident occurred on Friday, January 24, at around 8:30 PM in the Sheikhpara Tetultala Mor area of Khulna city.

Arnab, a resident of Basupara in Khulna, was the son of Nitish Kumar Sarkar. He was an MBA student at Khulna University with roll number 230317. Arnab belonged to the Hindu minority community.

The incident has been confirmed by the Head of the Business Administration Discipline, Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan; Hall Provost Professor Sharif Mohammad Khan; and the Director of Student Affairs, Professor Dr. Md. Nazmus Sadat.

Incident Details:
According to Sonadanga Police Station, Arnab was sitting on his motorcycle and drinking tea near Tetultala Mor when a group of 10–12 assailants shot him and fled the scene. Locals rushed him to the private Khulna City Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead after examination.

Although the reason for the murder remains unclear, the police recovered shell casings from the scene. However, no arrests have been made yet.

Arnab’s friend Fahim stated, “Hearing gunshots, I rushed to the spot and saw a crowd gathered. Seeing a helmet on the ground, I realized it was my friend. We took him to the hospital, but he didn’t survive. Arnab and I were MBA students at Khulna University.”

Sonadanga Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Shafiqul Islam, confirmed the incident, stating, “Arnab Kumar Sarkar was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, where he was pronounced dead. An investigation is ongoing.”

Deteriorating Law and Order in Bangladesh:
Since August 5, 2024, when Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus took office as the interim head of government, the law and order situation in Bangladesh has reportedly worsened significantly. Minority persecution, house raids, theft, robbery, and murders have become frequent occurrences.

Many Awami League activists are reportedly fleeing or living in hiding to escape persecution from police and opposition BNP-Jamaat leaders. The nation is witnessing numerous unidentified and known bodies being discovered daily. Ordinary citizens are grappling with a surge in crimes like theft and robbery.

Critics blame the worsening governance for such incidents, citing the public shooting of a promising university student like Arnab as a reflection of the ongoing turmoil in the country.
