Trump Threatens Sanctions on Russia Over Ukraine Discussions

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose sanctions on Russia. He stated that if President Putin does not engage in discussions regarding Ukraine, he will impose sanctions on Russia.

Just a day after being sworn in as the U.S. President, Trump issued this warning. This information was reported by Reuters on Wednesday, January 22.

According to the news agency, President Vladimir Putin has been warned by Trump that if he refuses to discuss ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, he may impose additional sanctions on the country.

Trump, however, did not provide specific details about these potential sanctions. The U.S. has already imposed widespread sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Trump mentioned that his administration is also reviewing the possibility of sending weapons to Ukraine. He emphasized that the European Union should do more to support Ukraine.

“We are talking to [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky, and we will very soon speak with President Putin,” Trump said. He also mentioned that he had pressed Chinese President Xi Jinping to intervene in ending the Ukraine war.

“He (Xi Jinping) didn’t do much on this issue. He has a lot of power, just as we do. I told him—you should resolve this matter. We discussed it,” Trump said.

It is worth mentioning that on January 20, Monday, just before being sworn in as President, Trump pledged to end the Ukraine war. He expressed hopes of pressuring Kyiv to make concessions to Russia. Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
