Zelensky Seeks Continued U.S. Support Even Under Trump

In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. By February next year, the war between Russia and Ukraine will mark its third anniversary.

However, before that, Republican Donald Trump is set to take office as the President of the United States. In this context, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hopes that U.S. support for Ukraine will continue under the upcoming Trump administration.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw this week, Zelensky said, “We are waiting for the inauguration of the U.S. President. I think the whole world is waiting because the United States is a strategic partner for global stability.”

Zelensky described the United States as “the largest donor to Ukraine’s existence in this war against Russian aggression” and expressed optimism about deepening cooperation based on the policy of “peace through strength.”

He further mentioned that his government is already in contact with Washington regarding a potential meeting with newly elected President Donald Trump. He said, “Our team is working on the details of this important discussion. We want to end this war, but under the right conditions for peace.”

In future peace negotiations, Ukraine’s primary focus will be on achieving strong and comprehensive security guarantees to prevent any future aggression from Russia.

It is worth noting that Trump has already expressed doubts about the continuation of U.S. military aid to Ukraine. He has even stated at various times that he would end the war before his inauguration on January 20.

However, his aides have recently indicated a new timeline for ending the war: within the first 100 days of his presidency, which would be by the end of April.

Marco Rubio, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, said during his confirmation hearing on Wednesday, “Even if the conflict ends, Ukraine must build its defensive capabilities.” He emphasized that this is crucial for Ukraine’s long-term security and stability.
