’80s Cult classic horror reboot is finally coming to cinemas

After a long wait, Peter Dinklage’s much-anticipated reboot of the 1984 cult classic The Toxic Avenger is finally hitting US cinemas in 2025. The film, which premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023, had struggled to secure a distributor but has now found a home with Cineverse, much to the delight of fans.

In this reimagining of the iconic comedy-horror film, Dinklage stars as Winston Gooze, a janitor who is transformed into a mutant vigilante following a freak accident. Dinklage, best known for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, brings a fresh spin to the beloved character originally created by Troma Entertainment.

Director Macon Blair, who also wrote the script, expressed his excitement about the release. “I’m beyond grateful to the team behind The Toxic Avenger, who were so supportive as we searched for the perfect distribution partner,” Blair said in a statement. “It’s so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theatres. It’s a fun, rowdy movie that’s perfect for the whole family!”

Blair emphasized that while the new version honors the spirit of the original, it also introduces something new. “Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie while making something fresh and exciting for both new and old fans,” he added.

The film features a star-studded cast, including Luisa Guerreiro, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon. Blair also makes an acting appearance in the film.

The Toxic Avenger joins a legacy of sequels and a spin-off TV series, further cementing its place in pop culture. Fans of the original can now look forward to seeing Toxie back in action on the big screen in 2025.
