8 Cannes Award-Winning Films Earn 31 Oscar Nominations

In a remarkable turn of events, the Cannes Film Festival continues to be a major influence on the Oscars, with several films from the 2024 edition now leading the charge for the 97th Academy Awards. This year, 8 films from Cannes’ official selection have collectively received 31 nominations across 17 categories.

At the forefront is the French film Emilia Pérez directed by Jacques Audiard, which has made history with 13 nominations, the most ever for a non-English language film. This includes nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best International Feature Film, Music (Original Score), Makeup, and more. The film won both the Jury Prize and Best Performance by an Actress Award at Cannes.

Sean Baker’s Anora, which won the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, has also secured 6 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Lead Role), Best Film Editing, and more.

Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, which won Best Screenplay at Cannes, has garnered 5 nominations at the Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Lead Role), Makeup, and Best Screenplay (Original).

Other notable films include The Apprentice by Ali Abbasi and Flow by Gints Zilbalodis, both of which earned 2 nominations each. The Seed of the Sacred Fig by Mohammad Rasoulof received a nomination for Best International Feature Film, while The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent by Nebojša Slijepcevic and The Girl with the Needle by Magnus Von Horn received nominations in the Short Film and International Feature Film categories, respectively.

The Cannes Film Festival congratulated all the nominees and expressed its best wishes for their success at the upcoming Oscars. The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
