Why Is Khilafat Leader Mamunul Haque Threatening the BNP Government?

- October 12, 2026, 04:27 AM ET

Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque has warned that the BNP-led government cannot remain in power by manipulating the July National Charter or ignoring the referendum verdict, demanding immediate implementation of the results and warning of politically disastrous consequences if the government fails to act.

Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque has issued a stern warning to the BNP-led government, saying it cannot remain in power by manipulating the July National Charter or disregarding the outcome of the referendum.

Addressing a rally in Sylhet on October 11, Mamunul demanded the immediate implementation of the referendum results, warning that failure to do so would have serious political consequences for the government.

His remarks raise questions about the growing pressure on the BNP government from political forces demanding the implementation of the July National Charter and the reforms associated with the referendum.

Mamunul argued that constitutional reforms must ensure a balance of power among state institutions, judicial independence, an impartial administration and a credible electoral system. He stressed that these reforms are essential to establishing accountable governance and protecting democratic rights.

Beyond constitutional issues, the Khilafat Majlis leader criticized the deteriorating law-and-order situation, extortion, rising commodity prices and shortages of electricity, gas and fuel.

He warned that disruptions in energy supplies were threatening industrial production, particularly in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector, a major pillar of Bangladesh’s economy.

Calling on the government to address the mounting economic and public-service challenges, Mamunul demanded stable energy supplies, affordable fertilizers for farmers, employment opportunities and protection for businesses.

He also pledged to continue protests until people’s rights and demands were addressed.

The warning places additional political pressure on the BNP-led government as it faces demands to deliver on constitutional reform commitments while tackling economic hardship, energy shortages and law-and-order concerns.

Mamunul’s remarks also highlight the possibility of further confrontation between the government and political groups seeking faster implementation of the July National Charter and the referendum verdict.

Why is Mamunul Haque threatening the BNP government? His warning reflects concerns over the implementation of the referendum results, constitutional reforms and the government’s handling of economic and public-security challenges. Whether these demands lead to sustained political mobilisation will depend on the government’s response and the progress made in implementing the proposed reforms.
