DHAKA : Two leaders associated with the Awami League and its affiliated organizations have been killed in separate attacks in Jhenaidah and Cumilla in recent days, amid continuing reports of violence against party activists since August 2024.

Monayem Hossain, 48, an Awami League ward unit president and Vayna Union Parishad member, was hacked to death in Harinakundu, Jhenaidah, on September 9. He was attacked while returning home from Moyenkhali Bazar and later died at Kushtia General Hospital. Police said several teams were working to identify and arrest those responsible. At the time of reporting, his family had not filed a written case.

In a separate incident, Anwar Hossain, 45, a Jubo League ward president and former Srikail Union Parishad member, was reportedly hacked to death at his home in Muradnagar, Cumilla, on September 13. His wife was also seriously injured. His family alleged that the attack followed his refusal to pay a Tk 10-crore extortion demand.

The killings add to reports of attacks, injuries, killings and the looting or burning of homes belonging to Awami League leaders and activists and their families since August 2024.
