At least 26 civilians were killed in an attack on tourists in Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir. The incident took place on Tuesday (April 22) in Pahalgam, located in the Anantnag district, according to local sources.
Indian media outlet NDTV reported that the attack occurred in an open grassland area accessible only by foot or horseback. A group of tourists had visited the area on Tuesday morning when the attack took place.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that the exact death toll is still being determined. He remarked, “Compared to previous attacks on civilians, this one is significantly larger in scale.”
Following the incident, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah over the phone and instructed him to take appropriate action. Amit Shah then left for Srinagar, the capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, to attend an emergency meeting.
