NETROKONA, June 17, 2026 — A court in northeastern Bangladesh has ordered the imprisonment of a local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in connection with a case alleging extortion, abduction, robbery, and death threats against a businessman.
Nazrul Islam, 36, general secretary of Ward No. 9 of Bangla Union Jamaat-e-Islami in Netrokona Sadar Upazila, was sent to jail on Tuesday after he appeared before the Netrokona Sadar Judicial Magistrate Court, according to court officials and lawyers involved in the case.
The accused is the son of Naib Uddin of Koyra village in Netrokona district headquarters.
Lawyer Saiful Islam Pradip, representing the complainant, confirmed the court order.
“The court has ordered that accused Nazrul Islam be sent to jail in this case,” Pradip told reporters after the hearing at the Netrokona court complex on June 16.
The case stems from allegations made by local businessman Md. Rubel Rana, 39, who claims that Nazrul Islam and several associates had repeatedly demanded Tk 2 million (20 lakh taka) from him.
According to the complaint submitted to the court, Rana has long operated a footwear business in Dhaka and currently runs a sand, stone, and coal trading company named Messrs Sandhi Traders in Netrokona.
Allegations of Abduction and Extortion
In the case filing, Rana alleged that on the evening of July 7, 2025, he was traveling with his company’s manager and driver toward his business premises on Azhar Road in Netrokona town when a group of men intercepted his vehicle.
The complaint states that he was forcibly taken to Moktarpara Field, where Nazrul Islam and several others allegedly demanded Tk 2 million from him.
Rana claimed that when he refused to pay, the accused threatened to kill him and forcibly took Tk 20,000 that he was carrying in his pocket.
The businessman further alleged that local residents rushed to the scene after hearing his cries for help, prompting the accused to flee.
Before leaving, the suspects allegedly warned that if the remaining money was not paid, he would be killed and his body disposed of.
The First Information Report (FIR) also states that the day after the incident, Nazrul Islam allegedly telephoned Rana’s business manager and issued further threats.
According to the complaint, parts of the incident were captured by CCTV cameras installed at a nearby business establishment.
Four additional individuals from the same locality have also been named as accused in the case alongside Nazrul Islam.
Jamaat Confirms Organizational Role
Moshiur Rahman, former president of Bangla Union Jamaat-e-Islami, confirmed that Nazrul Islam currently serves as the general secretary of the party’s Ward No. 9 unit.
“Today the court sent him to jail. However, I do not know the exact details of the case. I heard there had been some family-related disputes,” Rahman said when contacted regarding the allegations.
No formal statement from Nazrul Islam or his legal representatives was immediately available.
