Washington, June 5, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would be willing to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, but only if Washington and Tehran succeed in reaching an agreement amid ongoing tensions between the two countries.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said he would feel “honored” to hold talks with Khamenei despite deep disagreements between the United States and Iran. According to reports cited by Reuters, the U.S. president indicated that any such meeting would depend on progress in negotiations between the two governments.
Trump stated that he would remain respectful during a potential meeting, even though his administration has frequently criticized Iran’s leadership. He also acknowledged that he is “probably not” among Khamenei’s favorite people but described the Iranian leader as a professional figure.
The remarks come at a time of heightened tensions following months of conflict and diplomatic strain between Washington and Tehran. Analysts believe the political environment has become increasingly complex following recent military confrontations involving U.S. forces and Iran.
During the same exchange with journalists, Trump reiterated his claim that Iran’s military had been severely weakened. He asserted that the country’s naval and air capabilities had been effectively destroyed and said the United States had dismantled much of Iran’s air defense infrastructure and other military assets.
Iranian officials have not immediately responded to Trump’s latest comments. The prospect of a meeting between the two leaders would mark a significant diplomatic development if negotiations between the two countries move forward.
The United States and Iran remain divided over a range of security and regional issues, although both sides have continued to signal interest in diplomatic engagement under certain conditions.
