KYIV, June 2, 2026 — At least five people were killed and dozens more injured after Russia launched a massive overnight missile and drone assault on several Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv and the southeastern city of Dnipro, Ukrainian authorities said on Tuesday.
According to officials, four people were killed and 16 others injured in Dnipro, while one person lost their life in Kyiv, where at least 29 people were wounded. The attacks triggered air raid sirens across much of the country, forcing thousands of residents to seek shelter.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two high-rise residential buildings were struck during the attack, raising concerns that people may be trapped beneath the rubble. Fires and power outages were reported in several districts of the capital, while emergency services worked to assess the extent of the damage.
“The enemy is striking with ballistic missiles,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, urging residents to remain in shelters.
An industrial facility in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia was also reportedly hit during the wave of attacks.
The strikes come amid heightened tensions between Moscow and Kyiv. Last week, Russia warned it would carry out “systematic strikes” against Ukraine in response to a Ukrainian drone attack on a dormitory in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region, which Moscow said killed 21 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier warned of a possible large-scale Russian assault, citing intelligence reports that suggested Moscow was preparing a significant strike. In a video address on Monday night, Zelenskyy urged citizens to pay close attention to air raid alerts and follow safety instructions.
Russia has recently threatened to target military and government decision-making centers in Kyiv and advised foreign nationals to leave the city.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Armed Forces reiterated that a strike conducted near Starobilsk in May targeted a Russian military unit, rejecting Moscow’s accusations regarding civilian casualties.
The latest attacks underscore the continuing intensity of the war, with both sides exchanging strikes as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict remain stalled.
