WASHINGTON, D.C., May 31, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump has requested significant revisions to a proposed agreement between the United States and Iran, seeking stricter conditions before approving the deal, according to reports from U.S. media outlets Axios and The New York Times.

During a meeting held in the White House Situation Room, Trump instructed his negotiating team to amend several key provisions related to Iran’s nuclear program. According to Axios, the current draft requires Iran to pledge not to develop nuclear weapons but contains limited details on additional concessions or enforcement mechanisms.

A senior U.S. administration official told Axios that Trump wants more specific terms outlining how the United States would take control of Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and the timeline for implementing such measures.

Sources familiar with the discussions also said Trump is seeking changes to the wording concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital shipping route that has been at the center of recent regional tensions.

The revised draft has reportedly been sent back to Tehran for further consideration. Iranian officials are expected to take at least three days to respond to the proposed amendments. A senior U.S. official expressed optimism, saying Washington hopes to receive a positive response early next week.

The New York Times reported that while Trump has clearly pushed for tougher conditions, the exact nature of the changes made to the agreement has not yet been publicly disclosed.

The developments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran following months of heightened military and political confrontation in the region.
