The United States’ largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, has departed the Middle East following its involvement in operations linked to tensions with Iran, a US official confirmed on Friday (May 1).

Although the USS Gerald R. Ford has left the region, the United States continues to maintain a significant military presence in the Middle East. According to the official, around 20 US warships remain deployed, including the aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS George H. W. Bush.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is currently operating under the United States European Command area of responsibility. The carrier had been deployed at sea for approximately 10 months. Prior to its Middle East mission, it was stationed in the Caribbean region, where it was reportedly involved in operations related to Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela.

During its deployment, the vessel experienced several technical and operational challenges. On March 12, a fire broke out in the ship’s laundry room, injuring two sailors. The carrier was later sent to Greece for repairs. It also reportedly faced significant plumbing issues, causing long queues among crew members for restroom facilities.

Meanwhile, a ceasefire is currently in place between the United States and Iran, though no permanent resolution has been achieved. Iran continues to exert pressure by restricting access through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, while the United States has imposed a naval blockade in response.
The situation remains tense, with both sides maintaining military readiness despite the temporary halt in direct hostilities.
