KATHMANDU, Nepal — April 22, 2026: Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung has resigned following mounting controversy over alleged financial irregularities and questionable business associations, according to international media reports.

In a statement posted on social media, Gurung said he stepped down on Wednesday to ensure a fair and independent investigation into the allegations and to avoid any conflict of interest. “To facilitate an impartial inquiry into the accusations against me, I have resigned from the post of Home Minister,” he wrote.

The controversy emerged after media reports linked Gurung to business dealings with Deepak Bhatta, a businessman currently under investigation for alleged money laundering. Further reports also claimed that Gurung’s organization, Hami Nepal, had received funds from questionable sources, intensifying public scrutiny.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s press secretary, Deepa Dahal, confirmed in a brief statement that the prime minister will oversee the Home Ministry until a new minister is appointed.
Gurung, who previously led the non-governmental organization Hami Nepal, rose to prominence during the youth-led Gen-Z movement in September 2025. He later joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party ahead of the March 5 parliamentary elections, securing a seat in the House of Representatives. He was appointed Home Minister on March 27.

The resignation marks a significant development in Nepal’s political landscape, raising concerns over transparency and accountability within the country’s leadership.
