India has nominated Dinesh Trivedi, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as its next High Commissioner to Bangladesh in a rare political appointment, marking a departure from its long-standing practice of assigning career diplomats to neighboring countries.
According to Indian media reports, Trivedi’s name has already been sent to Dhaka for approval. The appointment will be formally announced by India’s Ministry of External Affairs once Bangladesh grants its consent.
India has traditionally relied on professional diplomats from the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) for postings in neighboring countries. Political appointments are typically reserved for key capitals such as Washington or London. The move to appoint a political figure in Dhaka is being viewed as a significant strategic shift.
The development comes amid efforts by Narendra Modi’s government to rebuild ties with Bangladesh following recent political changes. Relations between the two countries had become strained during the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus.
Following national elections, a new government led by Tarique Rahman has taken office, prompting New
Delhi to actively re-engage. Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar recently visited Dhaka, while senior officials attended the new government’s swearing-in ceremony. Modi has also invited Rahman for an official visit to India.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman visited New Delhi earlier this month, where Dhaka raised key issues including increased supply of diesel and fertilizers, as well as requests for extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
The current High Commissioner, Pranay Verma, has been reassigned as India’s envoy to Brussels.
Background:
The 75-year-old Trivedi is a former Railway Minister in the government of Manmohan Singh and previously served as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. A seasoned parliamentarian, he has been a member of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Trivedi left the Trinamool Congress in 2021 and joined the BJP shortly thereafter.
His appointment signals a politically calibrated diplomatic push by New Delhi as it seeks to recalibrate its relationship with Dhaka in a changing regional landscape.
