Responding to queries on the issue, India’s Ministry of External Affairs indicated that any such matter would be handled strictly through established legal and diplomatic frameworks. While refraining from confirming whether a formal extradition request has been received, officials emphasized adherence to bilateral agreements and domestic law.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated that India is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and respects the country’s sovereignty and internal processes. He avoided commenting on specifics of the case, noting that extradition-related issues are sensitive and require careful legal examination.
India and Bangladesh share an extradition treaty, which provides the basis for cooperation in such matters. However, experts note that extradition decisions are rarely straightforward, often involving scrutiny of legal evidence, the nature of charges, and broader diplomatic considerations.
Analysts say New Delhi’s calibrated response reflects its effort to maintain a delicate balance—supporting rule of law while preserving stable bilateral relations with Dhaka. The issue is also seen as significant for regional diplomacy, given Sheikh Hasina’s long-standing political influence in Bangladesh.
As the situation evolves, both governments are expected to proceed cautiously, with any decision likely to emerge only after detailed legal review and diplomatic engagement.
