U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that top leaders from Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold talks on Thursday, marking the first such high-level engagement in 34 years.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump said efforts are underway to create a more stable environment between the two nations. “We are trying to bring a bit of calm between Israel and Lebanon. After nearly 34 years, their leaders will speak,” he wrote.
However, it remains unclear which leaders will participate in the discussions. Speculation continues over whether the talks will involve Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or President Isaac Herzog, and whether they will engage with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun or Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Analysts suggest that Lebanon may seek to set conditions for a ceasefire ahead of any high-level meeting. Israel, however, has not yet agreed to a ceasefire, reportedly aiming to further weaken the capabilities of Hezbollah.
The potential talks are being closely watched as a rare diplomatic development between the two long-time adversaries.
