The United Kingdom has decided not to participate in the U.S.-led military blockade of Iranian ports around the Strait of Hormuz, despite rising tensions in the region.
British naval ships and personnel will not be used in enforcing the blockade. However, the UK will continue its operations in the area with mine-clearing vessels and drone-defense systems.
A spokesperson for the British government said the country remains committed to ensuring freedom of navigation and reopening the Strait of Hormuz—both of which are crucial for the global economy and for managing the cost of living at home.
Earlier, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it would begin enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports from Monday. However, it clarified that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz to and from other countries would not be obstructed.
Iran has strongly rejected the move. The Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated that the country would not bow to threats.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also expected to hold a press conference later today following his recent visit to several Persian Gulf countries.
