The Bangladesh Awami League has strongly condemned the passage of a bill in parliament banning the party, describing it as a “shameful and alarming chapter” in the country’s political history.

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, the party alleged that the parliament—formed through what it termed a “so-called election”—had disregarded democratic values and norms by passing legislation against one of Bangladesh’s oldest and most influential political organizations, which played a historic role in the Bangladesh Liberation War.

The Awami League said the national parliament, widely regarded as a cornerstone of democratic governance, had been used to establish the dominance of what it described as “anti-liberation and anti-state forces.” It argued that the decision goes beyond targeting a single political party and instead represents a direct attack on democratic practices, political pluralism, and the fundamental rights of citizens.

Describing the move as dangerous, the party warned that banning a political organization with deep historical roots could push the country toward an authoritarian or one-party system. It added that such actions undermine democratic institutions and challenge the nation’s political heritage and historical legacy.

The statement emphasized that the strength of any political party ultimately depends on the support of the people. It asserted that no force can permanently suppress a party that remains rooted in public support. The party also cautioned that repression, legal restrictions, and misuse of laws do not bring lasting solutions but instead create instability and deepen divisions within society.

Calling for collective action, the Awami League urged all pro-democracy citizens, political parties, civil society groups, professional organizations, and the youth to unite in defense of democratic rights, freedom of expression, and the rule of law.
Reaffirming its commitment to political struggle, the party vowed to continue its movement with determination, expressing confidence that “the victory of the people and democracy is inevitable.”
