The United States is preparing for a potential ground offensive in Iran that could last for several weeks, according to a report by The Washington Post on Sunday.
The report states that thousands of US troops have been assembled in the Middle East, and they could be deployed for a prolonged ground operation inside Iran. However, officials indicated that this would not resemble a conventional large-scale ground invasion.
According to sources familiar with the plan, the proposed operation could mark a “new phase” in the conflict, potentially more dangerous for US forces than earlier stages of the war.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one official said the plan would likely involve targeted raids by special forces and artillery units, rather than a full-scale ground assault. However, US troops could face significant threats, including drone strikes, missile attacks, and heavy gunfire.
The Washington Post contacted the White House for comment. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that it is the responsibility of the Department of Defense to prepare various options so that the Commander-in-Chief (the President) can make informed decisions. She emphasized that planning does not mean a final decision on launching a ground offensive has been made.
Potential Target Areas
Kharg Island is being considered as a possible target for the operation. Located near the Strait of Hormuz, the island is a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports, accounting for around 90 percent of its crude shipments. Targeting the area could be aimed at ensuring uninterrupted maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.
One official suggested that the operation could last several weeks, while another source indicated it might extend for months.
Since the conflict began on February 28, at least 13 US soldiers have been killed and nearly 300 others injured, highlighting the growing intensity of the situation.
