Argentina national football team secured a narrow 2–1 victory over Mauritania national football team in an international friendly, as part of their preparations ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
The match, held at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, replaced a previously scheduled Finalissima clash against Spain national football team, which was canceled due to venue complications amid tensions in the Middle East.
Despite being one of the highlights of the match, Lionel Messi started on the bench and came on in the second half to loud applause. However, the Argentine captain had a quiet outing and was unable to make a significant impact, with his only shot on target denied.
Argentina took control early in the game. In the 17th minute, Enzo Fernández opened the scoring, finishing off a cross from Nahuel Molina. The lead was doubled in the 32nd minute when Nico Paz scored a stunning free-kick.
After the break, Argentina’s rhythm dropped following Messi’s introduction, as they failed to register another shot on target. Meanwhile, Mauritania grew into the game and tested goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez on several occasions.
The visitors managed to pull one back in stoppage time, as Jordan Lefort capitalized on a scramble inside the box to score in the 93rd minute, adding late drama to the contest.
Argentina will next face Zambia national football team on March 31 at the same venue, in what will be their final home match before the World Cup.
