A woman was detained by police on Thursday while attempting to pay tribute at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, near Dhaka, along with her three children during Independence Day celebrations.
The incident occurred around 11:30 am near the memorial’s fountain area. The woman, identified as Tahmina Akter, had reportedly arrived with her children to lay wreaths on behalf of the Bangladesh Awami League.
According to police, she chanted slogans such as “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu” and was carrying leaflets linked to the party at the time. Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka district police took her into custody at the scene.
Saidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of the DB (North), said the woman was detained for engaging in political activity at the memorial and that legal proceedings were underway.
Speaking to journalists while in custody, Tahmina said she is originally from Cumilla and currently lives in Dhaka’s Lalbagh area. She added that she had previously worked at a government hospital but is currently unemployed. Since August 5, she said, she has been involved in grassroots politics with the Awami League.
She also stated that she had brought her three children with her voluntarily. Police confirmed that the children were not detained.
