European Union President Ursula von der Leyen has called for an end to the ongoing violence involving Iran and urged all parties to engage in dialogue to resolve the crisis.
Speaking during her visit to Australia on Monday, von der Leyen made the remarks at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. She highlighted that the conflict between Iran and the United States has disrupted global energy supplies, affecting millions of people worldwide.
“This conflict has created serious disruptions in energy supply chains globally. We are already seeing the impact on oil and gas prices, trade, and societies,” she said. “It is essential now to pursue a diplomatic solution and bring an end to tensions in the Middle East.”
Maritime attacks condemned
Von der Leyen also criticized Iran’s reported attacks on civilian ships in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, calling such actions unacceptable and dangerous for international security.
Background of escalating tensions
Tensions between Iran and Washington have lasted for decades, mainly over Iran’s nuclear program and missile development. On February 4, officials from both countries met for talks aimed at resolving these issues. However, after several rounds, discussions ended on February 27 without any agreement.
Within 24 hours of the talks collapsing, military strikes were launched on October 28 by the United States and Israel, triggering a wider conflict.
The European Union has warned that continued escalation will worsen global instability and has urged all sides to return to diplomacy immediately.
