US President Donald Trump has claimed that a “regime change” is underway in Iran following indications of potential negotiations to end the ongoing conflict. Speaking to CNBC on Monday, Trump pointed to the reported deaths of several top Iranian officials and their rapid replacements as evidence of shifting power dynamics within the country.
Trump said that “strong and constructive” discussions had taken place with Iranian representatives, though he declined to specify the individuals involved. In a separate interview with Fox Business, he expressed optimism that a deal could be reached within five days, suggesting that Iran is “desperate” to come to an agreement.
According to the US president, recent talks were led by senior envoys including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. These engagements come amid rising global concern over energy markets and supply disruptions caused by escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Reports from Israeli media, citing journalist Barak Ravid, indicate that Trump has temporarily suspended a five-day ultimatum threatening strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure if the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains closed. The deadline was set to expire Monday but has now been extended following diplomatic efforts.
Countries including Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey have reportedly intensified mediation efforts, with their foreign ministers engaging separately with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US officials. Discussions have reportedly expanded beyond reopening the Strait of Hormuz to include a broader ceasefire.
However, Iran has firmly denied any ongoing negotiations with the United States. Semi-official agencies linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including Fars and Tasnim, rejected claims of talks, asserting that Tehran has not engaged in any direct or indirect dialogue.
Iranian sources further claimed that it was Washington, not Tehran, that stepped back under pressure. They emphasized that Iran would continue its defensive operations until it achieves what it considers a sufficient level of deterrence.
Despite Trump’s optimistic tone, analysts caution that no final agreement has been reached, and the situation remains highly volatile.
