Argentina Withdraws from WHO, Citing Policy Independence

Buenos Aires says it will pursue bilateral and regional health cooperation after formally exiting the UN health body

Argentina has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), marking a significant shift in its international health policy. The decision was confirmed on Tuesday by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno.

In a statement shared on social media, Quirno said the withdrawal process has already taken effect. He emphasized that Argentina will now prioritize its national health sovereignty while continuing international cooperation through bilateral agreements and regional partnerships.

According to the minister, the move allows the country to design and implement independent health policies tailored to its domestic needs without being bound by WHO frameworks.

Argentina’s decision follows a similar step previously taken by the United States, which also withdrew from the global health body.

The development raises questions about the future of multilateral cooperation in global health governance, especially at a time when coordinated international responses remain crucial for managing pandemics and other health crises.
