Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio’s film One Battle After Another emerged as the biggest winner at the Academy Awards, taking home six trophies including Best Picture.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the dark political comedy-thriller also earned him the awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Producer. The film received a total of 13 nominations at this year’s ceremony.
The story follows a group of revolutionaries resisting an authoritarian American regime. After years in hiding, their past returns when the daughter of a former revolutionary is kidnapped, forcing them to reunite and confront powerful forces.
Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for portraying the corrupt military officer Colonel Steven J. Lockjo in the film—his third Oscar win. The film also received awards for Best Casting and Best Film Editing.
Michael B. Jordan Wins Best Actor
The vampire horror film Sinners, which led the nominations with 16, won four Oscars. Michael B. Jordan claimed the Best Actor award, beating Timothée Chalamet.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film blends blues music and Black cultural themes with supernatural horror. Jordan portrayed twin brothers who open a juke joint in 1930s Mississippi, only to face a vampire invasion. The film also won Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.
Jessie Buckley Makes History
Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her performance as Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare, in the film Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao. She became the first Irish actress to win the Oscar for Best Actress.
Amy Madigan Wins After 40 Years
Veteran actress Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for her role in the horror film Weapons. The 75-year-old actress received her second career nomination—40 years after her first—for Twice in a Lifetime in 1985.
Animated and International Winners
Netflix’s animated feature K-Pop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Feature and also claimed Best Original Song for “Golden.” Meanwhile, Norway’s Sentimental Value, directed by Joachim Trier, won the award for Best International Feature Film.
The awards ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and was hosted for the second consecutive year by comedian and talk-show host Conan O’Brien.
Organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscars honored the best films of 2025 across 24 categories, with more than 11,000 members of the global film academy voting for the winners.
