Dhaka, March 11 — Police have arrested Dr. A K M Jamal Uddin, a professor of sociology at University of Dhaka, under the country’s anti-terrorism law, officials said on Wednesday.
He was detained in the morning during a march in front of the Gulistan Stadium area in the capital. After being taken to the police station, he was formally shown arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act for allegedly working on behalf of a banned organization.
The information was confirmed to the media by Rezwanul Islam, additional deputy commissioner of the Motijheel Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Earlier, Jamal Uddin had announced a program titled “Dhaka–Tungipara Bangabandhu Peace March 2026” from in front of Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
On February 15, the professor and four others were reportedly assaulted by an angry crowd when they visited the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32. They had gone there after announcing a program called “Public Mourning” on social media earlier that day. Police later rescued them from the scene.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the investigation, but the arrest has drawn attention in academic and political circles in the capital.
