Internet-Free Messaging App ‘Bitchat’ Introduced by Jack Dorsey

New Bluetooth-based peer-to-peer messaging platform aims to enable communication without internet access

A new messaging application that allows users to send messages without using the internet is currently under development. The app, called Bitchat, has been introduced by technology entrepreneur Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, now known as X.

Unlike popular messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram, which rely on mobile data or Wi-Fi, Bitchat is designed to operate entirely without internet connectivity. Instead, the app uses Bluetooth technology to enable direct communication between nearby devices.

Bluetooth-Based Communication

Bitchat functions through a peer-to-peer communication system, meaning messages are transmitted directly from one device to another without the need for centralized servers. Each smartphone acts as both a sender and a receiver, allowing users to exchange messages within close proximity.

Typically, Bluetooth connections work effectively within a range of about 100 meters. However, the developers of Bitchat plan to extend the communication range to approximately 300 meters, allowing users within that distance to exchange messages seamlessly.

Group Chats and Local Networks

Beyond one-to-one messaging, Bitchat will also allow users to create group chats or chat rooms. Multiple devices connected through Bluetooth can form a small local network or cluster, enabling messages to travel from one device to another within the network.

This feature could make it easier for groups of friends, families, or teams to communicate even when internet access is unavailable.

Potential Use in Emergencies

Technology analysts believe that applications like Bitchat could play a significant role during emergency situations. In events such as wars, natural disasters, or political unrest, internet services are often disrupted or shut down, making communication difficult.

In such scenarios, an internet-free messaging platform could help people share urgent information and stay connected.

Currently in Testing Phase

The Bitchat app is currently in its experimental stage. Initial reports suggest that it may first be released for iPhone users, with broader availability potentially following later.

If successfully launched, Bitchat could introduce a new alternative for communication, particularly in environments where traditional internet-based messaging services are unavailable.
