Iran’s Retaliatory Missiles Hit Across Middle East

Explosions rock Gulf states as Iran retaliates and airspace closures disrupt regional travel

Washington and Tehran were plunged into an intense military confrontation on Saturday as coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory prompted a swift and sweeping retaliatory barrage by Iran against Western and allied military installations across the Middle East.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and US forces launched what officials described as a “broad & joint operation” against targets inside Iran, including key infrastructure and military sites, in what has been reported as an effort to degrade Tehran’s strategic capabilities. Explosions were widely reported in Tehran and other Iranian cities as air defenses engaged incoming ordnance.

Reacting within hours, Iran’s military launched ballistic missiles and other strikes toward US and Israeli positions across the Gulf, bringing hostilities to a region that has seen relative stability in recent years. Countries including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates confirmed they had intercepted missiles launched from Iranian territory, particularly over areas hosting American forces.

“The services center affiliated with the Fifth Fleet was subjected to a missile attack,” Bahrain’s official news agency reported on Saturday, underscoring the scope of Iran’s response.

Regional Airspace Disruptions and Civilian Impact

The escalation led to immediate aviation disruptions. The United Arab Emirates announced the closure of its airspace as an “exceptional precautionary measure,” with major carriers rerouting or cancelling flights. Emirates, the UAE’s global airline, said that regional airspace closures had caused disruption to several flights. Similarly, Qatar Airways confirmed the temporary suspension of flights to and from Doha due to the closure of Qatari airspace.

In both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, eyewitnesses reported hearing loud explosions, and residents described air raid sirens and government advisories to take shelter.

International Condemnations and Government Responses

Qatar’s Ministry of Defense condemned the Iranian missile strikes as a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty and a threat to regional peace and stability. “The State of Qatar expresses its strong condemnation of the targeting of Qatari territory … and an unacceptable escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region,” the ministry said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia, despite not being directly targeted, released a statement denouncing Iran’s attacks as a “flagrant violation” of the sovereignty of several Gulf states and affirmed its readiness to support measures undertaken by its neighbors.

In a rare direct comment on the strikes from Tehran, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps declared that its operation would continue “until the enemy is decisively defeated,” including targeting “all occupied territories and the criminal U.S. bases in the region.”

Statements from US and Israeli Leadership

US President Donald Trump took to social media to declare that “the United States military began major combat operations in Iran,” stating that the aim was to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.” His comments framed the offensive as necessary to counter threats posed by Tehran’s military and missile programs.

Israeli leadership described the coordinated operation as aimed at neutralizing what they have long termed an existential threat from Iran’s regional ambitions. Israeli air defenses reported intercepting many of the missiles Iran launched, and officials emphasized their readiness to continue defensive operations as needed.

Civilian Disruption and Regional Fallout

The conflict’s repercussions spread quickly beyond military targets. US embassies across the region instructed American citizens to shelter in place and avoid movement until further notice. The threat environment also prompted airlines to suspend or reroute flights, with ripple effects on global travel.

Military analysts warn that this latest escalation — following months of mounting tensions, failed nuclear negotiations, and prior skirmishes — could draw in additional actors and widen the conflict’s geographic scope.

What Comes Next

As of Saturday evening, authorities across the Gulf continued active defense operations, and Iran’s leadership vowed further retaliatory measures if pressure persists. Calls for de-escalation from international organizations and global powers are emerging amid fears of a broader conflagration.

With airspace closed over key Gulf hubs and hostile operations now touching multiple nations and military alliances, the Middle East faces an acute security crisis with uncertain outcomes in the coming days.
