Sheikh Hasina Preparing to Return Home, Urges Party Leaders to Be Mentally Ready

In a video message aired on “Doctor Milton Show,” the former prime minister reportedly says she is unafraid of jail or execution and calls on Awami League leaders abroad to prepare for return

Former Prime Minister and President of the Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, is preparing to return to Bangladesh and has instructed party leaders currently staying in India to be mentally ready to face any situation upon their return, according to claims made in a recent video message.

The remarks were shared by political analyst and public health expert Dr. Abul Hasnat Milton on his YouTube channel, “Doctor Milton Show.”
Virtual Meeting with Leaders in Kolkata
In the video, Dr. Milton stated that Sheikh Hasina recently held a virtual meeting with members of the Awami League’s working committee who are currently in Kolkata. During the meeting, discussions reportedly focused on the boycott of the recent national election, upcoming historic dates in March (March 7, 17 and 26), and, most importantly, the possible return of exiled party leaders to Bangladesh.

According to the account presented in the video, leaders in Kolkata told Hasina they would prefer to return once the rule of law and judicial fairness are ensured. In response, she reportedly urged them to prepare mentally and to be ready to face any circumstances back home. When asked about her own return, Hasina allegedly said party leaders should return in their own way, and she would return in hers.

Passport Issue and Legal Readiness
The video further claims that although Sheikh Hasina’s passport has been cancelled, it is considered a “technical barrier.” She has reportedly informed Indian authorities of her intention to return to Bangladesh and is prepared to face legal proceedings. According to the message, she is not afraid of imprisonment or even capital punishment and believes the Indian government will not put her at risk.

Criticism of Interim Government
The video also strongly criticizes the 18-month interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. It describes a May 12, 2025 government gazette that banned Awami League activities as “completely illegal” and demands that the restriction be withdrawn. The working committee has reportedly warned of a tougher political movement if the ban is not lifted.

The message also accuses the interim government of damaging the country’s economy and banking sector.

Concerns Over Law and Order
Addressing the broader political climate, the video raises concerns about law and order, citing a recent incident in Barishal on February 24–25, 2026. According to the account, tensions erupted at a court premises after bail was granted to an Awami League leader, leading to unrest involving pro-BNP lawyers. Barishal District Bar Association President Sadiqur Rahman Linkon was later arrested and sent to jail.

The incident, the analyst argues, reflects that the rule of law has yet to be fully restored.
Political Reactions and Historical Reference
Dr. Milton also claimed that news of Hasina’s potential return has created concern among leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement and several political groups. He alleged that some are pressuring the BNP to maintain the ban on the Awami League and promoting what he described as a “false narrative” that former President Ziaur Rahman made a mistake in allowing Hasina to return to Bangladesh in 1981.

Drawing on historical context, he asserted that Hasina returned in 1981 at her own risk and not as a result of political favor.
The video concludes by arguing that Bangladesh’s politics remains largely bipolar—centered on the Awami League and BNP—and that Hasina’s return would restore political balance, potentially sidelining smaller parties. Although no specific date was mentioned, the message suggests her return could take place in the near future.
