Family reveals his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder as Hollywood and former co-stars pay tribute

Robert Carradine, the American actor best known for his roles in The Long Riders, Revenge of the Nerds, and the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire, has died at the age of 71, his management confirmed.

In a statement shared with Deadline, Carradine’s family said, “It is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away.” They described him as “a beacon of light” and acknowledged his nearly 20-year struggle with bipolar disorder.

The family expressed hope that sharing his story would help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. “We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness,” the statement read.

Born on March 24, 1954, Carradine was the youngest son of legendary actor John Carradine and the brother of actors David Carradine and Keith Carradine. He made his film debut in the 1972 Western The Cowboys, starring alongside John Wayne, before building a decades-long career in film and television.

Carradine rose to widespread fame in 1984 for his portrayal of Lewis Skolnick in Revenge of the Nerds, a comedy that became a cult classic and spawned multiple sequels. Two decades later, he gained a new generation of fans as Sam McGuire, the father of the title character in the hit Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire.

His former co-star Hilary Duff shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, writing, “This one hurts. It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend.” She expressed sadness over his struggles and extended condolences to his family.

Carradine’s daughter, actress Ever Carradine, also posted a heartfelt message, remembering her father as loving, supportive, and deeply present in her life.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Robert Carradine worked across studio films, independent projects, and television, leaving a lasting mark on Hollywood. His family said he will be remembered not only for his talent but also for his resilience and warmth.
