A father who had been anxiously waiting for his imprisoned son’s release passed away before his wish could be fulfilled, leaving the family in grief and appealing for humanitarian consideration to allow the son to attend the funeral.
Md. Abu Sama (Sami), the only son of the deceased, has been detained for nearly six months at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur in connection with a political case. He was actively involved in the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party at the time of his arrest.
According to family and local sources, Sami was arrested on August 23, 2025, following political developments in the country. Since then, he has remained behind bars. The family claims that although he was engaged in student politics, he was not involved in any violent or criminal activities and has been implicated in what they describe as a politically motivated case.
Relatives say the emotional distress of seeing his only son in prison took a severe toll on the father’s health. He gradually became critically ill and passed away on Wednesday morning. “Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un,” family members said in mourning.
Sami’s lawyer, Farzana Yasmin Raki, stated that he has already secured bail from the High Court. However, due to procedural delays and verification processes, his release has not yet been executed. The father’s death occurred amid this delay.
Family members said the father’s last wish was to see his son one more time. “He wanted to see Sami before he died. That wish remained unfulfilled,” a relative said, urging authorities to grant Sami parole so that he can attend his father’s janaza (funeral prayer) and perform the final rites.
Another family member questioned, “Is being involved in student politics a crime? He is not a criminal. At this moment, we appeal to the authorities to consider the humanitarian aspect and allow him temporary release or parole to attend his father’s funeral.”
Attempts to reach Kashimpur prison authorities for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. However, under existing provisions, prisoners may be granted temporary parole in humanitarian circumstances with approval from the district administration and under police escort.
As the family prepares for the funeral, they now await an administrative decision—hoping that Sami will be granted the opportunity to bid his father a final farewell and place the last handful of earth on his grave.
