Dhaka: Five lawyers were allegedly attacked by a group described as “mob assailants” in the Gulistan area of the capital on Tuesday after they finished court proceedings and were heading home.
The incident occurred on Bangabandhu Avenue, where the lawyers were reportedly surrounded, physically assaulted, and robbed of their mobile phones, wallets, cash, and important documents. After the alleged assault and looting, the group forcibly took the lawyers to Paltan Model Police Station and handed them over to police.
Among the five detained lawyers, two are members of the Supreme Court—Golam Rabbani and Riazur Islam—while the remaining three—Shariful Islam, Mehedi Hasan, and Muttakin—are lawyers of the Dhaka Judge Court.
According to eyewitnesses and the victims, the lawyers were returning home after completing their professional duties when they were encircled by a group of individuals without any prior provocation. The assailants allegedly assaulted them and seized their belongings before dragging them to the police station.
The detained lawyers have claimed that the attack was carried out without any specific allegation or legal basis. They described the incident as an example of ongoing “mob violence,” alleging that organized groups are continuing to engage in vigilantism and unlawful actions in the city.
The incident has sparked anger and condemnation among members of the legal community, who have expressed concern over the safety of legal professionals and the growing trend of mob-related violence.
Although no immediate official statement was issued by police, authorities at Paltan Model Police Station confirmed that the five lawyers are currently being kept in custody and that the matter is under review.
