Shamme Akhter, the wife of former Member of Parliament and Supreme Court lawyer Syedul Haque Suman, has called for her husband’s immediate release, claiming he has been imprisoned for 16 months without committing any crime.
In an emotional message issued Tuesday, she alleged that her husband has been kept behind bars without specific wrongdoing and that their children are being deprived of their father’s love and care.
“My husband has been imprisoned for 16 months without committing any crime. My children are being deprived of their father’s affection. Why should they suffer? Their father has done nothing wrong,” she said.
She appealed to Barrister Suman’s supporters at home and abroad to raise their voices in protest, questioning why he has not been granted bail and urging what she described as justice and fairness.
Recalling her husband’s public welfare activities, Shamme Akhter said he chose a life of struggle over comfort for the sake of the people. “There is no need for me to say what he has done for the public. Everyone knows,” she added.
Barrister Suman was elected as an independent candidate from Habiganj-4 (Chunarughat–Madhabpur) in the 12th National Parliamentary Election. Following political developments after the fall of the Bangladesh Awami League government on August 5, 2024, he faced mounting legal challenges.
He was arrested from the Mirpur area of Dhaka in the early hours of October 22, 2024, in connection with multiple cases, including allegations of murder and attempted murder during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Prior to his arrest, he released a video message on Facebook stating, “I have committed no crime. I am ready to face trial.”
Several cases against him remain under trial. His family alleges political vendetta and says he has been denied bail despite a lack of concrete evidence. Authorities have yet to issue a fresh statement regarding the latest call for his release.
